ATM networks can provide very large link-layer networks
- It is often useful to segment an IP/ATM network into multiple IP subnets
- The logical (IP) topology should be appropriately mapped onto the physical (ATM) topology
- Analogous to VLAN design problem
- Mismatches are more costly in wide-area networks
