  • The only reasonable criteria for wide-area media selection is cost versus performance
    • If ATM is cost-effective in your network, use it
      • Do you need fine-grained multiplexing?
    • If packet-over-SONET is cost-effective in your network, use it
      • Do you own fiber? Can you get free/cheap fiber?
    • The cost characteristics of ATM have clearly altered the technical and political evolution of the Internet
